Summer 2018 Studio Update
I hope this message finds you well-rested and re-energized after the long holiday weekend! I am eager to share with you news of three exciting endeavors.
First, I invite you to view a new film by documentary filmmaker Allison Walsh that chronicles the development, construction, and opening of my most ambitious faculty-student collaboration, Journey to the Sea: An S.O.S. from Our Oceans, an installation at the Peoria PlayHouse Children’s Museum in Peoria, Illinois. The film artfully captures the way in which the greater Peoria community came together to help a small, but dedicated group of artists build a museum exhibit that aims to teach children and parents about the effects of plastics on the marine environment. You can view the 15-minute documentary by clicking on the link below.

Second, I am eager to announce that I will be traveling to England in June to participate in The Ephemeral River, a Global Nomadic Art Project. As the sole invited artist from the United States, I will work with creatives and scientists from South Korea, Finland, Germany, South Africa, Argentina, and the United Kingdom to create collaborative works that focus on river systems - with an emphasis on ephemerality. I have also been awarded a year-long sabbatical from Bradley University for the 2018-19 academic year. At the close of this spring semester, I packed up our apartment in Peoria while my husband, Jeff, prepared our boat in Deltaville, VA. In May, we moved aboard for a 15-month cruising adventure. Our plan is to sail north to Maine for July and August before returning to the Chesapeake Bay for the early fall. When we get a good weather window we will make our longest offshore trip yet aboard Bear, from Norfolk, Virginia to the British Virgin Islands, approximately 1300 nautical miles. From November to April we will island hop around the Caribbean, returning to the States in late spring. During this time, I will continue to make work about water ecology– with plans for additional bioluminescent organism experiments- as well as continue my photographic research into heritage tourism and climate change in coastal communities. I hope to see you many of you in distant ports over the next year and a half. Fair winds for now!
All the best,
