The Modern Day Diana

Diana was the Roman goddess of the hunt. She was praised for her strength, athletic grace, beauty, and hunting skills. Her vigor, health, and strength were admired, and her protection was sought for young children and women in childbirth.

The Modern Day Diana explores issues of cultural and social norms while examining women’s relationships to nature and violence. These images of female hunters inform and destabilize assumptions about hunting culture, normative constructions of gender, and the history of representation. Roxana Marcoci, Curator of Photographs at MOMA, selected this work for a 2010 Curator’s Choice Award at Center, Santa Fe.
